Description: Land Cover 2011 provides accurate landcover mapping for general landuse planning, environmental planning, environmental screening, monitoring, and reporting in the municipal boundaries of the City of Ottawa. The land cover map is based upon 2011 spring colour aerial photography at a resolution of 20 cm, supplemented by other data sources. These sources are:Non-evaluated Wetland Mapping 2011, City of Ottawa, 2016.Evaluated Wetlands, extracted from Wetlands, Land Information Ontario, Province of OntarioAggregate Licenses, City of OttawaTransportation, City of Ottawa2010 Land Use, City of Ottawa (Wooded Areas, Agricultural Land Use)Land Cover 2011 should not be used in place of these data sources for regulatory purposes. The main improvement of this mapping over past land use mapping is the incorportation of accurate non-evaluated wetland mapping, prepared by the City of Ottawa. Non-evaluated wetlands were identified and delineated using "heads up" digitization at a scale of 1:2000 or greater. Wetlands were delineated from City of Ottawa Spring 2011 colour aerial photography with a resolution of 20 cm. During the digitization process, additional data layers were used to provide topographic and historical context: City of Ottawa LiDAR data (as 1 m, 50 cm, and 25 cm contours, plus hillshading), and aerial photography from 2014, 2008, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1991, and 1976.Amalgamation and editing of the contributing data layers was accompanied by substantial geoprocessing, especially to ensure the removal of polygon slivers and gaps. This processing involved generalization procedures which resulted in many cases in minor changes or simplification of polygons from the original data layers. Although boundary changes should be limited to approximately 5 meters, users should make reference to the original data sources where exact boundaries are required. This is especially true for evaluated wetland boundaries.Land Cover 2011 is intended to be consistent with the Provincial Ecological Land Classification System. It consists of the following land cover classes (Class Code):2 - Sand and Gravel3 - Settlement4 - Transportation5 - Water7 - Wetland8 - Wooded Area9 - Crop and Pasture10 - Grassland11 - Rock BarrenThe original land cover map identified "unevaluated wetlands" and "evaluated wetlands" separately, as classes 6 and 7. They have been amalgamated into class 7, "Wetland".Two additional attributes are currently included:Treed (0 - not treed, 1 - treed) (Class Codes 6, 7, 8)Sub Class (0 - not hedgerow, 1 - hedgerow) (Class Code 8)Additional sub-classes will be added in the future, including forest type, wetland type, settlement type, impervious/pervious, and water type.Land Cover 2011 includes polygons that are much smaller than the 0.5 ha recommended in the Ecological Land Classification System, or the 0.2 ha recommended in the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System. This results primarily from use of the City of Ottawa 2010 Wooded Area data (from the 2010 Land Use Survey) to identify wooded wetlands (Class Codes 6 and 7, Treed). The cumulative contribution of these smaller polygons to overall forest cover was considered sufficiently substantial to merit retention.Classification errors are most likely to occur between grassland and woodland, and grassland and crop/pasture. Future refinement of the map may include splitting of the grassland category to include savannah and thicket land cover types. Small errors in mapping are also certain to have resulted through geoprocessing and from the supplementary data sources. This will be corrected as they are discovered.Land Cover 2011 will provide the base for 2014 and 2017 landcover mapping.
