The major river systems found throughout Ottawa are the Rideau, South Nation, Mississippi, and Ottawa Rivers, and the four major tributaries are the Carp, Jock and Castor Rivers and the Bear Brook. The PL_ES_Watercourse feature set is a consolidation of the two data sources. The first data source is the watercourse mapping maintained by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Ontario as part of the Hydrology Network (OHN) OHN_Watercourse feature. The second set is the constructed drain records kept by Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) available through Land Information Ontario (LIO) as the Constructed_Drain feature set, . The origin of of the OHN_Watercourse is the 1988 Ontario Base mapping and available through LIO\u2019. The PL_ES_Watercourse feature set has been reviewed and updated based modelled flow paths created from high resolution (LiDAR derived) Digital Elevation Model (which was generated from 2012 to 2015), structures (culverts and bridge) information, and aerial images ranging from 1991 to 2014.The watercourse features are categorized intro 11 segment types:1 \u2013 Natural - exhibits sinuosity and general characteristics of a natural watercourse 2 \u2013 Modified - exhibits characteristics including straigthened and other mofications to watercourses3 - Passage through structure - includes flow paths through culverts and under bridges, may not include small structures that do not affect the flow path4 \u2013 Piped - open water courses are noted up and downstream of piped sections and characteristics indicate connectivity - typically through agricultural land or in a few cases large stormwater pipes connecting open watercourses: notably Pinecrest and Voyager Creeks5 \u2013 Presence not apparent \u2013 previously mapped and no longer evident - typically representing the mapping of a municipal drain in the Engineers Report (a Legal Document)6 \u2013 Swale - no defined banks but clear surface feature where flows are funneled7 - Ditch - interpreted as a created feature that would not otherwise exist i..e. upstream catchment areas are insufficient to maintain a defined watercourse with banks. Included due to being previously mapped or seen as providing notable drainage connectivity. Strahler number of 0 has been assigned.8 \u2013 Waterbody flow path - identifies connectivity between upstream and downstream watercourse. \u2013 estimated flow path through a water body9 \u2013 Wetland flow path \u2013 a general direction of flow through a wetland based on surface analysis. Note that flows through wetlands are dispersed and can vary with season / time. Note also that LiDAR response from water / vegetation surfaces are poor / irregular / noisy10 \u2013 Creek to river connector \u2013 a link providing connection from a stream to the centreline of a river.99 \u2013 UnclassifiedOfficial and Drain Names: there are a series of names for conformance to MNRF Official Watercourse Names and OMAFRA Official Drain Names. MNR Official Watercourse Name: OfficialName_WatercourseOMAFRA - OfficialName_Drain.Since the Official Drain Names often have multiple names for a drain with branch names included an additional field has been added with the primary or root drain name: Drain_Name and Drain_Branch_Name.All attributes from the Constructed Drain features have been incorporated into the new watercourse features. The original watercourse-drain features may have been edited based on the new LiDAR and aerial interpretations preserved while updating the feature data set.Strahler Number - calualated using ArcHydro
