Recover a site

About site recovery

If the shared configuration store and server directories for a site are unavailable, a site in read-only mode will operate in a degraded capacity. This allows access to the ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory, ArcGIS Server Manager, and ArcGIS Services Directory, and keeps most services running as expected. At earlier releases, this was not the case, and the site would be down if such connection issues were to occur.

If the shared configuration store is unavailable and the server directories remain accessible, all of your site's services will be accessible and consumable. The limited administrative operations that function when the site is in read-only mode are no longer available. You also cannot return the site to editable mode if the shared configuration store is unavailable.

If the server directories are unavailable, regardless of shared configuration store availability, your services will function as expected with the following exceptions:

  • Geoprocessing services will not work.
  • Consumption of cached services will not work unless they are highly available.
  • Exporting a map or image service using a URL is not possible.

You can recover a site if the shared configuration store and/or server directories are permanently lost. The site must be in read-only mode and the site configuration files must have been copied to the local repository when switching site modes. You must ensure that the root path of the share that housed the configuration store and server directories has been made available for use.

To recover a site, follow these steps. You will recover the configuration store and the server directories separately.

Recover the configuration store

Recovering the configuration store will include everything in the local repository configuration store.

  1. Ensure that the root path of the shared configuration store location is available.

You cannot designate a new location for the shared configuration store.

  2. Log in to the ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory.
  3. Go to System > configstore > recover.
  4. Click Recover. The local repository configuration store contents will be copied to the shared configuration store.

Recover the server directories

Recovering the server directories will include all the directory contents from the local repository, except your cache, any geoprocessing jobs, and intermediate data in the outputdir. Service data copied to the server when published will also be recovered.

  1. Ensure that the root path of the shared server directories location is available.

You cannot designate a new location for the shared server directories.

  2. Log in to the ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory.
  3. Go to System > directories > recover.
  4. Click Recover. The contents or folder structure of the local repository will be copied to the shared server directories.

After recovery, the site will remain in read-only mode, but you can now switch the site mode back to editable.
